The Rotary Kiln Rim, also known as the tyre or riding ring, is a critical structural component of a rotary kiln system. It is mounted on the outer surface of the kiln shell and serves as the primary interface between the rotating kiln and the stationary support rollers (also known as riding rollers).
Load Bearing
The rim carries the full weight of the rotary kiln, including the shell, refractory lining, and the material being processed. It transfers this load to the support rollers, ensuring smooth rotation and mechanical stability.
Guidance and Alignment
It maintains the alignment of the kiln by guiding its rotation along the support rollers. The rim also works in conjunction with thrust rollers to limit axial movement (creep) of the kiln.
Thermal Stress Compensation
During operation, the kiln shell expands due to high temperatures. The rim is designed to allow slight relative movement (slipping) between itself and the kiln shell to relieve thermal stresses and prevent damage.
Rotary kiln rims are typically made of cast steel or alloy steel with high strength, good wear resistance, and excellent heat resistance. Common materials include ZG45CrMo or ZG42CrMo, depending on the operating environment and kiln size.
Precision machining and heat treatment are applied to ensure dimensional accuracy, surface hardness, and overall durability. The inner surface of the rim is carefully finished to match the kiln shell and allow for smooth thermal expansion.
As a vital load-transferring and stabilizing component, the rotary kiln rim plays a key role in the reliable operation and extended service life of rotary kilns used in cement, metallurgy, lime, and other industrial processes.
